I have to imagine that onomatopoeia and other imitative sounds were the very first ways we communicated with our voices. It completely makes sense.

Side note: some of the friends I had in elementary school would help us remember the word by saying "Onomatapoeia all over the floor."

It was funnier when we were kids.

Haha, that's a good mnemonic device. I found this word only a few months ago and was instantly entranced by the concept. It had my brain flying in every direction trying to understand the connection between onomatopoeia and human speech. I have been super into linguistics for a while now and I intend to use this year to further solidify my understanding of its key concepts.

Great minds think alike! I love thinking about where words come from in a specific language (etymology) as well as linguistics, where language itself came from. VERY fun stuff to think about, and very pertinent here in 2023.

Indeed it is pertinent. My master's degree thesis was on natural language processing but I had sort of put that research aside over the years with my interests shifting more towards quantum computing. But the LLM revolution brought language right back to my foray. I hope we can collaborate on some articles on linguistics this year. It will be a fun way to learn more and perhaps share some interesting insights along the way.
